El PEIN Muntanyes de Begur has a total area of 855.87 hectares, distributed between the municipalities of Begur, Mont-ras, Palafrugell and Palamós. The zone called Ses Negres – a 1.2 kilometre coastal strip between Sa Riera and Aiguafreda bays – has been protected since 1993 as an Integral Marine Reserve, under a special plan which involves a prohibition on any extraction, professional or sports activity, as well as sailing, mooring of boats and diving.
The Begur mountains are the prolongation of the Gavarres down towards the coast, forming small hills which, on arrival at the sea plunge down as cliffs.
The vegetation which predominates is made up of cork oaks, pines, rockrose and heather. Aleppo pine is the most abundant species, particularly in the coastal zone. The fauna is that typical of pine woods, with birds such as the coal tit, the crested tit, the firecrest and the wryneck. Small mammals such as squirrels and foxes are also to be seen. The richest zone in terms of aquatic fauna is the Ses Negres reserve, whose protection is resulting in a notable regeneration of biodiversity, with lobsters, crawfish, sea bass and many other species living alongside each other in these privileged waters.
Many aquatic pastimes can be carried out in the zone, together with hiking along the signposted routes.
