Begur, sheltered by its castle, has always been a town with a seagoing tradition. Apart from fishing, its history features the efforts of the coral divers, a trade that on this rugged coast is extraordinarily old.

The town currently has 4,221 inhabitants and a surface area of 20.66 km2, and has become an important tourist centre, but it still conserves its fishing-town atmosphere. The winding alleys house small restaurants and family-run hotels, and little shops dedicated particularly to arts and crafts.

The natives of Begur who in the late 19th C. emigrated to the American colonies and later returned with their fortunes built here a fine sampling of the splendid colonial-style houses known as cases d’indianos or d’americanos. Another remarkable architectural inheritance of the town is its watchtowers, strategically placed for early warning and protection against pirate raids.

Begur is preserved by the Begur Hills Protected Natural Area and the Ses Negres marine reserve, and its extraordinarily wild and rugged coastline forms a multitude of coves and secluded spots of great natural beauty. Some of these are former fishermen’s districts now converted into discreet tourist centres: Sa Riera, Aiguafreda, Sa Tuna, Platja Fonda, Fornells and Aiguablava.

The municipal district offers a great many activities: from guided visits to hiking through the Begur hills and water sports in the coves.
