Castell-Platja d'Aro
Castell-Platja d'Aro

The municipal district, with almost 10,527 inhabitants, is made up of a number of nuclei: the oldest, Castell d’Aro; Platja d’Aro; S’Agaró; and the old nuclei of Fenals.

Castell d’Aro, a few kilometres inland, developed around the old castle, a highly-restored medieval building, and the late Gothic church of Santa Maria. The old centre contains interesting buildings from the 15th to 18th C.

Platja d’Aro, which lies alongside a large beach of golden sand and grew out of the tourism boom of the mid-20th century, is the focal point of most of the tourist services. Its streets form a large shopping and leisure area with activity both day and night, 365 days a year. It includes a large number of shops and kiosks alongside all kinds of leisure establishments, bars, discotheques and restaurants.

To the south, bordering on the municipality of Sant Feliu, lies the residential development of S’Agaró. It was commenced in 1924 by the noucentista architect Rafael Masó, and includes buildings of notable interest. In the summer it holds the well-known S’Agaró International Music Festival.

In the area leading into the Gavarres hills you can visit interesting megalithic monuments like Sa Pedra Aguda or de les Goges, the menhir of Mas de la Font, and others.

Near the beach of S’Artigues stands the Roman villa of Pla de Palol, now carefully restored and an indispensable visit.

One of the municipal district’s most impressive festivities is the Platja d’Aro Carnival, thanks to which it is now included among the carnival towns of the world. The processions, dances and other entertainment events are an explosion of fun and happiness that brings together all of the people of the district and large numbers of visitors. And if you’re here at Christmastime, don’t miss the magnificent Living Nativity staged in the old town of Castell d’Aro.

Castell-Platja d’Aro has an extensive tourist infrastructure, with all kinds of accommodation, restaurants, services, water sports and so on.
